The Benefits of Life Coaching

Life coaching and mentoring have been proving themselves as valuable professions. Certification programs are building in respect, but it is fair to point out that the field is still largely unregulated. This lack of regulation makes it hard to judge the value of that certificate on a life-coach’s wall. Anyone can label themselves a ‘life coach’ – so what benefits are there?

Providing Perspective

Having a life coach on hand provides a second pair of eyes on what you are heading towards – what gives your life meaning and purpose. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a natural instinct for what makes you happy. Sometimes you need a second opinion. Life coaches use open-ended questions and active listening to get an idea of who you are as they guide.

Life coaching, as a largely unregulated field, lacks the established certification systems that therapy and psychology require for practice. This means the quality may be lower, but it is also more accessible. Part of this accessibility comes from the goals themselves. Therapy often orients itself towards helping you understand your thought processes. Life coaching, on the other hand, is more interested in a holistic view of you, your beliefs, your values, and the like.

Growth as an individual requires an honest view of yourself, and good awareness of who you are. While many don’t like the feeling of ‘self-consciousness’ that having a second pair of eyes on your life can bring, this is one of the most important ways of building honest self-awareness.

Being accountable to yourself is prohibitively difficult. It’s often easy to look at other people and feel compelled not to disappoint. But we often spend so much time in our own heads that we don’t think as much about accountability from ourselves. A life coach provides a new person to pin finishing tasks to – a new person who will hold you to finish the things you say you will finish.

Life-coaches have their place in the mental health field, and have many benefits to those who elect to work with them. If you think any of these benefits might represent a big boon to you, look into the option of a life coach – you never know until you try!
